When Eric and I got engaged in May we knew we would want to have our wedding close to our families in Ohio and West Virginia. After going over our options, we settled on Marietta, Ohio. This made sense because it’s where I went to college and it’s his hometown. We both have a lot of memories in this location.
It’s a cute little town that has a lot of character. There are great places to choose from for vendors and we know our way around. We knew it would be easy for most of our family and friends to get to since many of them live within an hour of this location.
The only challenge is that we don’t live there.
So far, planning a wedding from a different state hasn’t been too bad. I’ve been able to communicate fairly easily with our reception venue and photographer through e-mail and phone calls. It has been hard because I would like to meet in person to go over details, but it’s about a three hour drive away. It doesn’t make sense to drive all that way just for something that could be done over the phone, even if I’d prefer to meet in person.
I think things will get harder to be out of state once we start getting closer to our wedding day next September. Once we start having to do things like taste testing for the food and test runs on my hair and makeup I think it will become stressful because we won’t just be able to pop in or be there quickly. It will take a lot of planning, asking off work and trying to cram everything into one weekend. I worry that trying to do everything all together in one weekend will get really overwhelming.
I’m hope I’m wrong and things continue to go smoothly. I’m trying to be really proactive in the planning by not putting things off. I had our venue booked within a month of getting engaged and our photographer booked within three months. I already bought my dress at a shop here in Pittsburgh, so that will take some stress off that I don’t have to travel for dress alterations. We are ordering our invitations online, so that should be pretty easy.
Things we still need to do in Marietta are pick a florist, a salon and a DJ. Those are the next things to check off my wedding to-do list.
Does anyone have any recommendations for planning a wedding from another state? I’d love any advice!
